Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge
The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge covers nearly 60,000 acres of granite peaks, prairie grasslands, and clear-water lakes just northwest of Lawton — one of the oldest and largest federal wildlife refuges in the country. Bison, longhorn cattle, elk, and white-tailed deer roam freely across the landscape, and the refuge draws hikers, rock climbers, and wildlife photographers year-round. Mount Scott's summit road offers panoramic views of southwest Oklahoma that stretch for miles on a clear day.
Charter buses can access the main refuge entrance off OK-49, with parking areas near the Visitor Center and Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area. Confirm oversized vehicle access with the refuge before your visit.
